This battle took place June 21-24, 1864 south of Petersburg, Virginia along the Petersburg & Weldon Railroad. The railroad brought supplies to Lee’s armies and Grant sought to cut off this supply line. The Second Vermont Brigade fought in the First Battle of the Weldon Railroad. Sharpshooters from the Vermont Brigade were sent to secure the railroad while other troops tore up the rails.
