Funkstown Oct. 1863
The battle we commonly refer to as “The Battle of Funkstown” was actually the second battle of Funkstown. A smaller skirmish took place three days prior to the major battle on July 7th. By mid afternoon of the Battle of Funkstown on July 10, 1863 Col. Lewis A. Grant’s First Vermont Brigade arrived and attacked the Confederate forces, not realizing Gen. George T. Anderson’s Confederate brigade now faced them. The ensuing opposing infantry battle was the first since the battle at Gettysburg. The Union army began withdrawing in early evening and once again had been held at bay.
This map includes the vicinities of Hagerstown, Funkstown, Williamsport, and Falling Waters, Maryland. This map accompanied the report of Major General G. G. Meade, on the battle of Gettysburg, dated October 1, 1863.
