Fort Stevens July 1864
Fort Stevens was constructed in 1861 as “Fort Massachusetts” and was a part of extensive fortifications around Washington D.C. It was later named Fort Stevens after Brig. Gen. Isaac Ingalls Stevens death. The Fort came under attack July 11 and 12, 1864. Both days of the battle President Lincoln traveled to the Fort to see the happenings. On July 12 President Lincoln was fired upon by sharpshooters and thankfully Union Maj. Gen. Horatio Wright ordered Lincoln to take cover.
