On April 16, 1862 the First Vermont Brigade led by William Farrar Smith attacked Confederate troops at Lee’s Mill dam. The soldiers slogged through deep water, across logs and eventually were faced with entrenched fire pits. Needless to say it was a disaster that resulted in 65 dead and 148 wounded.
