Fredericksburg Dec 1862
At the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Vermont Brigade saw action during the first battle. The bulk of the Union Army was located across the Rappahannock River and awaited the construction of the pontoon bridge. Once completed the Union soldiers advanced and were met with fierce resistance from the Rebel forces. That battle saw another military disaster from the Union standpoint and camped the winter near the battle sight. In early May the following year, fighting resumed. The Vermont Brigade was comprised of the Vermont Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Regiments who also participated in battles at Bull Run, Lee’s Mill, and Antietam.
The map below illustrates the Battle of Fredericksburg Dec. 13, 1862 and is entitled “In indicating the Union artillery, we have followed an official map made under the direction of General Henry J. Hunt, chief of artillery.”
