Crampton’s Gap

Brooks’ Brigade consisted of 5 Regiments

2nd Vermont: Major James H. Walbridge
3rd Vermont: Colonel Breed N. Hyde
4th Vermont: Lieutenant Colonel Charles B. Stoughton
5th Vermont: Colonel Lewis A. Grant
6th Vermont: Major Oscar L. Tuttle

The 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th Vermont were not actively engaged in the battle.

The 4th Regiment was active. First Lieutenant George Hooker, Co. E, “Rode alone, in advance of his
regiment, into the enemy’s lines, and before his own men came up received
the surrender of the major of a Confederate regiment, together with the
colors and 116 men,” and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for
his actions.

The loss of the regiment that day was one killed and 14 wounded, two of whom
died of their wounds.”
