The western edge of the map shows a portion of New York province – from Albany at the bottom up through Fort Ticonderoga, Lake Champlain and Canada.  These two map excerpts show the Albany area on both versions of the original map – the 1757 manuscript (left) and the 1761 printed version (right).  Note the Dutch names such as “Van Beuren” and “Van Antwerpen”. The buildings depicted are presumably the major farms of the area.  The 4-sided cross-like symbols prominent on the 1757 map are the forts at Schenectedy and Albany.

The “Scaticook” River on the right side is the Hoosuck River.  The dashed line near the bottom is a projection of the Massachusetts-New Hampshire boundary line which was established in 1741 by one Richard Hazzen.  Hazzen’s survey, which started at fare to the east on the Merrimack River, ended at the Hudson River, even though the Massachusetts and New Hampshire had no claim to the Hudson Valley.

The Hudson River narrows above Albany, and travel on the ancient thoroughfare was impeded by several waterfalls.  Note the “Ist Carrying Place” at Fish Kill and second one just to the north.
